If the limestone is a thin shelf with softer material beneath, we can sometimes punch through and continue grinding deeper. Attempting to grind through solid Indiana limestone damages equipment unnecessarily and doesn't improve the outcome for the homeowner.

The restoration approach on shallow-bedrock sites differs from deep-soil sites. On sites where bedrock limits grinding depth, building the surface back up with fill is essential for a finished result. Surface root grinding is an important add-on service in Oolitic because the shallow bedrock forces trees to develop extensive lateral surface roots. The species is not a particularly aggressive sprouter, so root chasing on hackberry is a case-by-case decision based on the stump's location and the homeowner's replanting plans.

Red oak and white oak are present on Oolitic properties but are less dominant here than in deeper-soil areas. Oaks growing on shallow bedrock may have restricted root systems that make them more vulnerable to windthrow — which is why they get removed and become stumps in the first place. The stumps are dense and hard, consistent with oak across all of our service areas.
